How To Improve Your Reading Habits

Reading is an activity that everyone ought to enjoy. It can however be therapeutic to some people and stressful to others. A good book can be what one needs to relax after a long day of stress but not everyone sees it this way. This is mostly due to their reading habit. Here are seven ways by which we can improve our reading habits.

1. PLAN

Planning an activity well often ensure it success. So to improve on our reading habit, setting up a plan is necessary. Read for at least 5-10 minutes in the morning and a minimum of thirty minutes before bed, depending on how flexible our sleeping schedule is. And if you are doing it for academic purpose - you can set an alarm to do your reading when everyone is asleep and the environment is tranquil.

2. ALWAYS HAVE A LIST/TIME TABLE

If your interest is in reading for leisure, having a list of books to read might inspire our reading habit. For example, reading a trilogy is good because finishing the first part of the series, one would want to get to the next book and eventually the third. And for academic books, a time table can really be helpful, this helps to free up overloading ourselves with too much information.

3. REDUCE DISTRACTION

Platforms like the Internet, music, television etc can be distracting to our reading habits. If you want to read more, try reducing the hours you spend on social media and television and invest them in reading.

4. BUY BOOKS

Spending money on books can be really helpful in getting our reading habits up. It is found that people tend to utilize more what they spend their money on than what is given as gifts.

5. VISIT LIBRARIES

Going to libraries can help us discover our reading habit. Making a weekly trip will pique our interest, although it can be a bore at the beginning but as you make it a necessity, you will discover it isn't.

6. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME

If for some reason, you do not feel like reading, you can either cut back on the time you want to spend on reading or just close the book and try your hands in something more productive like cleaning or even watching television.

7. SET A GOAL FOR YOURSELF

Tell yourself that you want to read 50 books this year (or some other number like that). Then set about trying to accomplish it. Just be sure you’re still enjoying the reading though — don’t make it a rushed chore. For academic books, set a goal that you want to read a certain percentage of the curriculum; this way you are ahead of your class mates and it doesn't sound like a bad idea.

NOTE: To get better at your reading habits, it is advisable to always know what works best for you because what works well for someone else may not be for you.
