'I call on the Nigerian Police to immediately apologise to members of the BBOGs group'

Human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo has demanded that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris and the Nigerian Police apologise to members of the BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) group.

Keyamo in a statement today said the Nigerian Police should immediately apologise to the members of the group over their “illegal arrest.”  His comments come less than 24 hours after the police officers in Abuja accosted and arrested some BBOG members who were protesting against what they call high-level of insecurity in the country and they insisted that they have the right to stage a peaceful demonstration.

While the protesters were barricaded by policemen, the Convener of the group, Oby Ezekwesili said the Nigerian Police infringed on their fundamental rights to free movement.  In his reaction, the legal practitioner said the IGP should apologise to the group because that the right to peaceful demonstration is enshrined in the nation’s constitution.

According to him, the purported arrested came as a “shock, bewilderment and disillusionment coming on the heels of the recent illegal arrest and detention of some online journalists by the same Police, acting at the behest of the IGP.”

“I, therefore, call on the Nigerian Police to immediately apologise to the members of the group for this unwarranted, unjustified and provocative trespass on their persons and deprivation of their freedoms. I also reiterate my call for the removal of the Inspector-General of Police from office for these unpardonable and inexplicable infractions of the fundamental rights of citizens of our country,” he said.
