Clarence Peters is a household name in Nigerian music video production. Raised in a family of creatives—his mother, veteran actress Clarion Chukwuka, and his father, iconic musician Shina Peters—Clarence was immersed in the world of creativity from a young age. It’s no surprise that he eventually found his calling in cinematography.
In an insightful conversation with Chude Jideonwo on #WithChude, Clarence opened up about how his upbringing in a creative environment influenced his career, but also how he battled feelings of imposter syndrome early on. His mother, Clarion, was the first person to truly recognize his potential and support his vision.
Though Clarence became well-known for directing music videos, he had always aimed for more. He envisioned a platform for telling larger stories, leading to the founding of his production company, Capital Dreams Pictures, which he approached with the mindset of a filmmaker, eager to broaden the scope of his work.
During the conversation, Clarence also reflected on the challenging years from 2020 to 2023, a period that proved to be both tough and transformative for him. "I had to go through the fire to get where I am today," he shared. He explained that while those years were filled with intensity, they were also crucial in shaping his character. “I’ve really only started finding myself again this year. Patience was a lesson I had to learn, and I realized that things are never completely good or bad. Nothing is black and white,” he added.
Clarence expressed gratitude for the support he received during his most difficult times, particularly from Olamide, who stood by him through thick and thin. He also praised industry stalwarts like Bose Ogulu and Jude Okoye, describing them as a "wealth of wisdom" from whom he learned invaluable lessons.
The conversation also delved into how the industry has changed over time. Clarence discussed his transition from directing numerous videos a week to observing the rise of a new generation of creatives reshaping the music video landscape.
It was a heartfelt conversation about growth, adaptation, and rediscovering one's path when faced with uncertainty.
