Nigerian football icon Austin 'Jay Jay' Okocha is optimistic about the Super Eagles' chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, he emphasizes that the team must take decisive action to improve their current standing.
Despite facing challenges in the qualification campaign, Okocha sees a potential route to success, but it will require nothing less than exceptional performance from the players.
The Super Eagles recently sparked some enthusiasm among fans with a victory over Rwanda. However, their subsequent 1-1 draw at home against Zimbabwe dampened spirits, leaving Nigeria in fourth place in their group, six points behind leaders South Africa.
Nonetheless, Okocha, a veteran of three World Cups, remains hopeful. He stated, “For us to have a chance at qualifying, we must aim to win every remaining match.”
He acknowledged the difficulty of the upcoming clash against Bafana Bafana, saying, “They are currently leading the group; it will be a challenging match, but I’m confident we can secure a victory. Winning these crucial games is essential if we want to qualify.”
By focusing on these key matches and striving for excellence, the Super Eagles can still dream of a spot in the prestigious tournament.
