Nigerian Historical Fantasy "Osamede" to Premiere at Cannes Film Market

"Osamede," a Nigerian historical fantasy film, is set to premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Market on May 17th, marking a significant step for Nigerian cinema internationally.

Directed by AMVCA winner James Omokwe and executive produced by Lilian Olubi, "Osamede" tells the story of an orphaned girl in the 1897 colonial Benin Kingdom who discovers superhuman powers linked to an ancient stone. Her mission is to liberate her people from British rule.

Olubi emphasizes the film's potential to revolutionize the presentation of African historical narratives, bringing Benin mythology to life with Hollywood-level production. She will also speak at Cannes on innovative film funding.

Starring Ivie Okujaye Egboh and others, "Osamede" builds on a successful stage production by Olubi's Gold Lilies Productions, offering a pre-tested narrative. Omokwe states the film reclaims historical narratives through fantasy, aiming for a "Black Panther"-like impact for African historical fantasy rooted in Benin mythology.

"Osamede" arrives as Nigeria's film industry expands globally, aligning with the "Screen Nigeria" initiative. Notably, this year also marks the first time a Nigerian film ("My Father's Shadow") screens in Cannes' Official Selection, highlighting a dual representation.

Exclusive first-look images showcase the film's visual style, blending authentic Benin culture with spectacular effects. Shot in Benin City, "Osamede" aims to immerse audiences in a unique historical fantasy epic.
