Entertainment magnate David Geffen has begun divorce proceedings to dissolve his marriage with David Armstrong, also known as Donovan Michaels, just shy of their two-year wedding anniversary. Geffen, 82, filed the petition, enlisting the services of prominent divorce lawyer Laura Wasser and citing irreconcilable differences as the cause for the separation.
The couple, who wed almost two years ago, reportedly did not have a prenuptial agreement in place. Armstrong, 32, is a former go-go dancer who performed under the stage name Donovan Michaels. The couple's relationship had drawn attention due to their significant 50-year age difference, and the news of their impending divorce has surprised many.
Despite Geffen’s considerable wealth, estimated by Forbes at $8.7 billion, legal analysts suggest Armstrong may not receive a substantial settlement. Geffen, who retired over 15 years ago, reportedly has no active earned income and relies on investments such as stocks and equities.
Under California law, dividends and gains from individually owned property remain separate during divorce proceedings, potentially limiting Armstrong’s access to Geffen’s fortune. While Armstrong is entitled to spousal support, the duration is expected to be short. In California, support is typically awarded for half the length of the marriage, which in this instance would be approximately one year. The specific amount was not detailed in the divorce filings.
According to the documents, Geffen has agreed to cover Armstrong’s legal fees and will provide spousal support. Geffen, known for his extensive philanthropic activities, has made significant donations to education, the arts, and healthcare throughout his career.
