Why Tiwa Savage Doesn’t Want Her Son to Join the Music Industry

In a deeply honest interview with Joey Akan on Afrobeats Intelligence, Nigerian music icon Tiwa Savage revealed why she’s strongly against her son, Jamal, pursuing a career in music.

Tiwa, who has had an extraordinary career spanning over a decade, admitted that while the music industry may look glamorous from the outside, it’s an emotionally and financially demanding world with no guaranteed success. She shared that the chances of truly “making it” are very slim. Even for artists who break through and release hit songs, the pressure to maintain success, stay relevant, and project an image of wealth and luxury is exhausting. According to her, many artists struggle in silence, often putting up a front while dealing with burnout and financial instability.
Reflecting on her own journey, Tiwa talked about the COVID-19 lockdown, during which she set up a studio in her home. Though it seemed convenient, it slowly turned her home into a 24/7 work zone. She found herself recording songs as late as 2 a.m. while her son slept alone in the next room. That season made her reassess her priorities and realize the toll her career could take on family life.

She spoke from a place of deep maternal love and protection when she said, “There’s no way he’s going into music. Hell no.” It wasn’t about stifling his dreams but about shielding him from the uncertainty, pressure, and public expectations that come with the spotlight.

Tiwa Savage’s vulnerability in this interview sheds light on an often-hidden side of fame. For her, the decision is about offering her son a more grounded and balanced life one that doesn’t sacrifice emotional well-being for the chase of stardom.
