The Journalist Whose Voice Became Silence: Somtochukwu Maduagwu’s Last Day

In the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, the Nigerian media world woke to heartbreaking news: Somtochukwu Christelle “Sommie” Maduagwu had been killed during a robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja. The vibrant voice whose stories many tuned in for has been silenced.

Sommie was just 29 years old, a young woman whose ambition and professionalism seemed destined for greater heights. Born December 26, 1995, she was more than an anchor. She was a lawyer, producer, model, and advocate.

The news broke with sharp, tragic detail. Robbers, reportedly more than 15,stormed the apartment complex where she lived, moving from one flat to another, dispossessing residents. In the chaos, Sommie attempted to flee and jumped from her window, suffering severe injuries. She was later found alive, taken to Maitama General Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries and was brought in dead.

What followed the robbery has become another layer of outrage. Reports have emerged alleging police negligence: by the time the law enforcement arrived, Sommie had already been gravely hurt. Witnesses say the police claimed their vehicle had no fuel to transport her to further treatment. Some suggest she pleaded for help, but delay and lack of urgency may have cost invaluable time.
Her death has struck a nerve across Nigeria. The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, described the passing as “untimely, painful and unfortunate”, condemning the violence that cut short the life of a young professional. President Bola Tinubu also weighed in, demanding swift justice and calling the killing a tragic loss to the nation’s media circle. Meanwhile, the FCT Minister, and state authorities have confirmed that she was brought to the hospital already deceased and a preliminary medical report will aid investigations.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu expressed deep sorrow, calling her death “a heavy loss” and urging security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book. Many public and private voices have echoed that one bright flame has been extinguished too soon.

To remember who Sommie was is to remember her multifaceted life: A lawyer trained in the UK, a media personality who had come alive on screen, a woman who often used her platform to speak on issues of justice, equity, and society. Her social media posts now carry extra weight—one in particular stands out: just weeks before her death, she wrote, “I pray from the depth of my heart that Nigeria never happens to me or anyone I care about.” Many now reflect on that line with profound sadness, as though she foresaw danger.
Her transition from life to memory leaves many questions: Why did police delay? Why was a promising life allowed to be so easily snatched? How many more must we lose before systems act?
In mourning Sommie, Nigeria mourns a part of its promise: voices that could have challenged norms, stories that could have shaped minds, futures that might have bloomed.

As the investigation proceeds, and voices demand answers, the only certainty is that Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu’s silence is deep. But her legacy—her work, her voice, and the injustice of her death—will not fade.

May she rest in peace.
