Popular Nigerian health influencer Dr. Chinonso Egemba, widely known as Aproko Doctor, has sounded a strong warning to Nigerians after sharing a shocking story about a young man whose lungs were severely damaged due to excessive vaping.
According to the doctor, a 24-year-old man was rushed to the hospital last week gasping for air. He wasn’t a smoker and had no asthma history. But the cause of his distress shocked everyone — he vaped heavily.
“His friends thought he was having a panic attack. He wasn’t. His lungs were severely damaged,” Aproko Doctor tweeted.
The young man reportedly believed that vaping was just “flavoured water vapour” and a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes; a misconception that’s becoming dangerously common among Nigerian youths.
Aproko Doctor made it clear that vaping is not harmless. He explained that the so-called “vapour” is actually an aerosol filled with tiny, harmful particles that can cause irreversible lung damage.
He also addressed another common misconception about shisha smoking:
The health expert revealed that the young man is currently fighting for his life, and doctors are praying the damage is not severe enough to require a lung transplant.
Aproko Doctor ended his thread with a firm reminder:
“Your lungs are designed for one thing; breathing air. They are not an exhaust pipe. The only things you should be inhaling are air and prescribed medications. Full stop.”
His post has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing shock at how harmful vaping and shisha use can be. Others applauded him for constantly using his platform to educate people on health issues that are often ignored or misunderstood.
In a society where vaping and shisha have become trends in clubs and lounges from Lekki to Abuja, this serves as a timely reminder that what looks cool could be killing you slowly.
