Moroccan and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defender Achraf Hakimi has been named the 2025 CAF Men’s African Player of the Year, capping off a remarkable season for both his club and country. He finished ahead of Egyptian star Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) and Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray) to claim the continent's most prestigious individual football honour.
A Historic Win for the Defender
Hakimi's triumph marks a significant moment in the history of the CAF Awards. The 27-year-old right-back became the first defender in over 50 years to win the award, breaking the long-standing tradition of the accolade going to forwards or midfielders. The last defender to win was Bwanga Tshimen of Zaire in 1973. Hakimi is also the first Moroccan player to be crowned African Player of the Year since Mustapha Hadji in 1998.
The Treble-Winning Season
Hakimi was recognized for an extraordinary 2024-2025 campaign with Paris Saint-Germain, where his attacking prowess from the wing-back position was instrumental to the team's success:
Club Triumphs: He helped PSG secure a major domestic and continental quadruple, including the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France, the UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup.
Offensive Contributions: Hakimi delivered outstanding statistics, contributing 11 goals and 16 assists across all competitions.
Defensive Presence: Despite his offensive focus, he maintained defensive solidity, logging over 3,400 minutes and contributing to numerous clean sheets.
Accolades: His performances earned him places in both the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season and the Ligue 1 Team of the Season.
Hakimi, who was the runner-up for the award in 2024, made history by winning it in 2025, solidifying his status as arguably the best wing-back in world football.
