AGIS Bans Use of Mobile Phones for Staff on Grade Level 14 and Below

In a new directive that has sparked conversations across public service circles, the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) and the Department of Land Administration have announced a ban on the use of mobile phones within the office premises for all officers on Salary Grade Level (SGL) 14 and below.

According to the official memo, the policy takes effect from Wednesday, November 12, 2025, and strictly prohibits affected officers from entering the office premises with their mobile phones.

The notice, issued by AGIS management, reads in part:

While the management has not provided detailed reasons for the new policy, sources suggest the move may be aimed at boosting productivity, ensuring data confidentiality, and minimizing distractions within the agency.

However, the decision has stirred mixed reactions among staff and the general public. Some have praised the initiative as a step toward professionalism and improved focus at work, while others criticized it as too restrictive, arguing that mobile phones are essential for emergency communication and digital access in today’s work environment.

The AGIS directive joins a growing list of workplace policies across Nigerian government institutions seeking to regulate employee phone usage and protect sensitive information from potential leaks.

As the implementation date draws near, affected staff have been urged to comply fully and adapt to the new working condition.
