From Lagos to Global Icon: Wizkid’s Journey Captured in HBO’s "Long Live Lagos" Documentary

The premium documentary series HBO Music Box is set to feature Nigerian superstar Wizkid in a new installment titled, Wizkid: Long Live Lagos. Premiering on December 11, 2025, the film chronicles the artist's rise from his early life in Surulere, Lagos, to becoming a global music icon.

A Story Anchored by History

The documentary, directed by Karam Gill and executive-produced by Bill Simmons, offers an intimate look at the milestones and memories that shaped the GRAMMY-winning musician’s trajectory. It traces his journey to his groundbreaking performance: becoming the first African artist to headline London’s 60,000-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July 2023.

The narrative places Wizkid’s success within the broader context of the Afrobeats global explosion and the complex, longstanding cultural and colonial links between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Through exclusive footage and interviews, the film examines how Wizkid's raw talent and determination—developed with little formal industry infrastructure in Nigeria—pushed his music across continents.

The Cultural Significance

Long Live Lagos features contributions from key figures and collaborators, including Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, Jada Pollock, Julie Adenuga, Seni Saraki, Sunday Are, and Karen Binns. Their reflections frame Wizkid's achievements as more than just personal triumphs; they are presented as part of a significant cultural shift that is reshaping how African identity, culture, and music are represented on the world stage.

The documentary debuts on December 11 on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. It captures Wizkid at a defining moment in his career, honoring both the vibrant city that shaped him and the global audience that continues to champion his sound.
