Akwa Ibom Governor Bans Street Masquerades Over Safety Concerns

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has placed a ban on the use of traditional masquerades across the state during the festive season, citing rising security concerns.

The directive comes after several troubling incidents involving violence, harassment, and extortion linked to some masquerade groups in recent months. One of the most notable cases was the arrest of a masquerade group leader earlier in the year, following reports of attacks and intimidation in some communities.

Masquerades, especially the Ekpo masquerade, hold deep cultural significance in Ibibio tradition. They are seen as symbols of ancestral spirits and usually appear during festivals, traditional rites, and community gatherings. But according to the governor, the recent misuse of this cultural heritage for criminal activities poses a threat to public safety.
Governor Eno emphasized that culture must be preserved, but not at the expense of the lives and peace of citizens. He added that the state government will continue to support cultural displays that follow laid-down rules and respect community safety.

As the festive period draws closer, residents are advised to remain law-abiding while security agencies ensure strict compliance with the ban.

This decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the move for safety reasons, while others believe more dialogue is needed to preserve cultural traditions.

For now, the state maintains that security comes first.
