Maraji Sparks Debate With New Video on TikTok Feminists

Nigerian skit-maker and content creator, Maraji, has once again found herself at the centre of social media conversations after posting a new video addressing what she described as the “TikTok feminist” trend. The video, which quickly went viral, triggered a wave of mixed reactions across TikTok, Instagram, and X.

In the clip, Maraji humorously highlighted the behaviour of certain self-proclaimed feminists online, suggesting that many of them push an exaggerated version of feminism that appears more like male-bashing than a genuine fight for equality. Using her usual blend of sarcasm, facial expressions and quick character-switching, she portrayed how some creators turn every discussion into a gender war even when no one is attacking them.

Her video, although comedic, touched on a sensitive topic and instantly divided viewers. A large number of people agreed with her, praising her for calling out what they described as “performative feminism” and the rising trend of creators who use feminism as a content strategy rather than a real advocacy. Supporters felt she was speaking the mind of many Nigerians who believe the online feminist community has become too aggressive and unnecessarily confrontational.

However, the other side of the conversation came with equal force. Many women, especially those who identify strongly with the feminist movement, accused Maraji of trivializing real issues faced by women in society. They argued that her skit oversimplified and misrepresented feminism, making it easy for people to dismiss genuine advocacy as “overreacting.” Some felt her influence could reinforce stereotypes that women fighting injustice are simply being dramatic.

The debate spread across platforms, with users dissecting her message, her intentions, and the implication of using comedy to critique a social movement. While some insisted it was “just a joke,” others emphasized that jokes often shape public opinion and should be handled carefully especially by someone with Maraji’s large following.

Despite the heated conversations, one thing is clear: Maraji’s video opened yet another chapter in Nigeria’s ongoing conversation about feminism, identity, and social behaviour online. Whether people agreed with her or not, the viral clip has pushed many to reflect on the difference between true advocacy and online performance, and on how social media has reshaped gender-based conversations in this generation.

Maraji has not issued any further statements following the backlash and support, but the discussions sparked by her video continue to spread, proving once again the power of her influence and the sensitivity of topics surrounding feminism in today’s digital space.
