The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Lagos Chapter, has recently unveiled a set of strategic plans aimed at improving the welfare, professionalism, and protection of actors working in Nollywood, drawing attention from both industry insiders and entertainment audiences alike. In a high-profile courtesy visit to The Punch Newspaper offices on February 25, the leadership of the guild , led by Acting Chairman Mary Edward, emphasized the urgent need to strengthen partnerships, enhance visibility, and create more opportunities for actors across the industry.
During the meeting, guild officials highlighted several areas of focus under the newly inaugurated executive committee. Beyond cultivating stronger relationships with media houses to shape public perception positively, AGN officials also revealed plans to explore collaborations with corporate organisations, government bodies, and even security agencies; all with the view of creating a safer, more supportive ecosystem for practitioners.
A major part of these discussions centred on capacity building and professional development. Actors will now benefit from initiatives that promote training, better working conditions on set, and structured welfare schemes that include potential health policies and pension support. Guild executives acknowledged ongoing industry challenges like unpaid overtime, inadequate feeding, and poor accommodation on some productions and stressed that AGN will intervene where necessary to protect its members’ rights.
Emmanuel Onyika, Director of Guild Services, underscored the importance of membership, noting that many actors hesitate to join the guild due to lack of awareness, only seeking help when problems have already escalated. According to him, AGN’s role goes beyond advocacy is a body equipped to enforce standards, mediate disputes, and ensure that productions meet acceptable professional benchmarks before they are released.
The guild’s renewed push also reflects broader industry concerns around safety and discipline. With Nollywood’s growing global footprint and commercial success, there is an increasing call from stakeholders for enhanced governance, improved welfare systems, and a shared commitment to professionalism. As AGN continues to roll out these plans, many in the entertainment community are watching closely to see how the changes will reshape working conditions and career prospects for actors nationwide.
