Nollywood’s epic season is officially in full swing. Following a star-studded premiere that had the internet buzzing over the reunion of Segun Ogungbe and Wunmi Ajiboye, the highly anticipated Yoruba epic Irete: The Reckoning officially opened in cinemas nationwide on Friday, March 20, 2026.
If you thought you’d seen the peak of traditional drama, prepare to be corrected. Irete: The Reckoning is a high-stakes masterclass in betrayal, spiritual warfare, and the heavy price of a broken vow.
The Story: A Debt Paid in Blood
The narrative centers on Osimiri, a formidable witch who once used her dark powers to save the kingdom from total annihilation and secure the King’s throne. In an act of desperate gratitude, the King made a sacred oath: his son, Prince Aremo, would marry Osimiri’s daughter, Osunrayi.
Fast-forward years later, and the King’s memory—or perhaps his conscience—has failed him. The arrival of a mysterious, captivating young woman named Egbin throws the royal plans into chaos. When the King chooses to revoke his promise, he ignites a spiritual and political rivalry that threatens to burn the entire kingdom to the ground.
The Heavyweights are Out
Produced and directed by Segun Ogungbe, the film boasts a "who’s who" of Nollywood legends. The performances are already being hailed as career-defining:
Sola Sobowale: Commanding as always in a role that demands both authority and vulnerability.
Femi Adebayo & Odunlade Adekola: The titans of Yoruba cinema return to the big screen with an intensity that only they can deliver.
Deyemi Okanlawon: Bringing a modern edge to this traditional tale.
The Ensemble: Broda Shaggi, Faithia Williams, Ayo Olaiya, and Kolawole Ajeyemi round out a cast that ensures every scene is a highlight.
"In Irete: The Reckoning, the cost of a broken promise is deadlier than any sword. It’s a film about the weight of leadership and the permanence of spiritual contracts." — Cinemax Distribution.
