Herrera backs Martial to become 'one of the best players in the world'

The Spanish midfielder has backed the French winger to become one of the elite players this season at Manchester United Anthony Martial can become one of the best players in the world, according to to Manchester United team-mate Ander Herrera. The French winger scored 11 goals in all competitions last season, but was used sparingly by manager Jose Mourinho, completing 90 minutes just six times in the Premier League. Indeed, the 22-year-old was left out of France's World Cup-winning squad after a patchy season.

Martial's agent subsequently claimed earlier this summer that Martial wants to leave United, with reports linking the attacker with a move to Chelsea, who are braced for the prospect of losing Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich. Herrera, though, believes that his team-mate can thrive in Manchester, and has backed him to take his game to another level this season.

"He's very talented," he told Sky Sports. "He can be one of the best players in the world and I think he is very focused this season to smash it. "When you have players like Anthony, like Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez, those kind of players that can change the game." Indeed, Herrera believes United can be confident of success this season, insisting that no squad in the league is better than United's.

"If one of them cannot play, we have three or four more so we have lots of options. I think we shouldn't think that any other club in the Premier League has better players because at least we have as good as the opponents. "Now it's all about work, confidence, about keep playing like he did [in the friendly against CF America].

I am confident with them because they are all amazing players and Anthony looks very sharp." United face San Jose Earthquakes in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, and will then compete in the International Champions Cup, with games against AC Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid looming.
