Changing the Narrative: Filmhouse & Care4Her Wrap Up 5-Day Female Cinematography Intensive

Lagos, Nigeria — April 22, 2026

The future of Nollywood just got a lot more diverse. Following an intensive five-day technical deep dive, the Filmhouse Group and Care4Her Initiative have officially concluded their women-focused cinematography training program in Lagos.

What started as an ambitious goal to bridge the gender gap in technical film roles ended with a vibrant graduation ceremony, celebrating a new cohort of female visionaries ready to take their place behind the lens.

Mastering the Craft: A Look Back at the Week

This wasn't your average "sit-and-listen" seminar. For five days, participants were immersed in a high-pressure, hands-on environment designed to simulate a professional film set. The curriculum covered:

  • Technical Mastery: Practical camera operations, framing, and the physics of lighting.

  • The Art of the Story: Visual storytelling and composition techniques.

  • Industry Standards: On-set production etiquette and workflow integration.

By moving beyond theory, the program successfully equipped these women with the entry-level technical capacity needed to secure real opportunities in Nigeria’s competitive film and TV landscape.

"Women Behind the Lens": Words of Wisdom

The final day featured a powerhouse panel session themed "Women Behind the Lens: Creating Opportunities and Building Sustainable Careers." Winifred Wessels, Head of Marketing at Filmhouse Cinemas, shared invaluable insights on talent development. She challenged the graduates to see this certificate not as an end, but as a launchpad.

"Inclusion in technical roles isn't just about filling a quota; it’s about bringing fresh perspectives to our screens. Your development shouldn't stop here—keep shooting, keep learning, and keep demanding your space." — Winifred Wessels

A Shared Vision for Capacity Building

The collaboration highlights a growing movement within the creative economy to prioritize skills development over mere representation.

Oyinkansola Gbolagunte, Founder and Executive Director of the Care4Her Initiative, noted that this partnership reflects a deep-seated commitment to expanding what is possible for women in the technical sector. "We are building more than just skills; we are building a community of empowered creators," she stated.
