Michelle Obama has revealed that her decision to skip Donald Trump's inauguration, and other events earlier this year, stemmed from a need to prioritize her personal well-being.
On her podcast "IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson," she told actress Taraji P. Henson that her choice, met with public criticism, was about honoring her own needs. "People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason," she explained, noting that many assumed marital issues were the cause.
Obama emphasized that her decision was part of a commitment to self-care, even when conflicting with public expectations. "It took everything in my power to not do the thing that was perceived as right, but to do the things that were for me," she said.
She even removed the temptation to attend by ensuring she had no suitable attire ready.
The former First Lady also highlighted that setting personal boundaries was a lesson she aimed to impart to her daughters, Malia and Sasha. "I want them to start practising now the art of saying ‘no’," she said.
Obama previously spoke about the societal pressure on women who prioritize themselves, noting the public's disbelief when she made choices for her own well-being.
