The United States government has announced a new move that could lead to some immigrants losing their U.S. citizenship.
This is mostly for people who became U.S. citizens through naturalization, which means they were not born in the U.S. but became citizens later in life.
Now, the U.S. Justice Department says it will begin removing the citizenship for people who:
- Lied or hid important information when applying
- Committed crimes like fraud or gang activity
- Are involved in terrorism
- Or are judged to have bad moral character
This process is called denaturalization.
Before now, this kind of thing was very rare usually used for people with serious crimes like war crimes. But this new plan is wider and might affect more people, even those who have lived in the U.S. for many years.
Some lawyers and human rights groups are worried. They say the government could make mistakes or use the new rule unfairly. They also say it’s not fair that people can lose their citizenship through civil court, where they don’t always have a lawyer and the proof needed is less than in criminal court.
So far, it’s only a memo (official instruction), but it could mean more immigrants are at risk of losing their U.S. status even after many years of living peacefully in the country.
